A Mainspring-Driven FDM Automaton
Live Telemetry Capture
To engineer an elephant that truly walks, we must abandon the sliding cams of common clockwork and embrace the rigorous geometry of the Strandbeest.
This beast obeys the Clockwork Vow. There are no microchips, no servos, and no lithium batteries. Its heavy quadrupedal gait is driven entirely by the kinetic energy stored in a single, high-tension gramophone mainspring located in its thoracic cavity.
By scaling Theo Jansen’s majestic wind-walking linkages down to 12 inches, the Pachyderm plants its feet flat on the desk, bearing its own weight before pushing backward. This eliminates the dragging friction that dooms most 3D-printed automatons.
A 20-hour immersion into classical mechanical engineering, kinematics, and operational physics, mapped directly to the AOD lifecycle.
